The Vigil began with the image of a family waiting at the shore for their men folk to return from their toils at sea.

Sculptor Bob McDermott turned that vision into a tribute to the unsung women who remained behind to care for the children and keep their homes and hometown alive and vital during the long absences of their fathers, husbands and sons.

This bronze sculpture was cast from Bob McDermott's original wax "concept" model. He used this six inch tall model to work out the main design ideas that would became the Vigil.
